If you want to feel the real heartbeat of our community, you absolutely have to visit our open-air weekly market. Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the central square (Plaza Major) and all the surrounding medieval alleys explode with color, local farmers, and creative craftsmen.
This isn't one of those cheap, generic tourist markets. We take immense pride in our local, "zero-kilometre" produce. You'll see gorgeous heaps of fresh Mallorcan figs, sweet citrus fruits, organic pressed olive oil, and incredible cheeses. If you're a cheese lover, go search for "La Manchega" stall in the main square—it's my absolute favorite place to grab some hand-crafted local cheese to take on my hikes.
If you love a vibrant, buzzing crowd, go on Saturday. If you prefer a more relaxed stroll where you can chat with the sellers, Wednesday is your day. Arrive before 9:30 AM to beat the crowd, secure a parking spot, and shop while the morning breeze is still cool. **And here's a crucial local tip: bring physical Euro cash!** Most of our traditional farmers don't use card readers, so cash is absolute king here.
Our island cuisine is deeply rooted in our agricultural history, combining rich mountain game, sea-harvested fish, and local pork curing. When visiting Santanyí, you must seek out these legendary specialties:
This is our ultimate culinary symbol—a raw, cured pork sausage that is so soft you spread it like butter. It's seasoned with local sweet paprika and spices, giving it a rich, warm flavor. My favorite way to eat it is spread thick on warm, crusty country bread with a tiny drizzle of local wild honey. It's absolute heaven!
Our famous sweet, spiral pastry that has been baked here for centuries. It's incredibly light and flaky, baked traditionally with pork lard (which we call *saïm*, hence the name) and covered in a snowstorm of powdered sugar. You can get them plain, or filled with sweet pumpkin jam (*cabell d'àngel*—angel's hair) or rich fresh cream. Grab one at a local bakery with your morning coffee!
Mallorca's traditional vegetable dish. Layered slices of fried aubergines, potatoes, and red bell peppers, all baked in a clay dish under a rich, garlic-infused tomato sauce. A perfect summer accompaniment.
A highly savory traditional stir-fry combining chopped lamb or pork offal, potatoes, wild fennel, sweet peppers, and whole garlic cloves fried in olive oil. Highly aromatic and deeply historic.
A spicy, soupy rice dish cooked in a clay pot with seasonal game meats (rabbit, chicken, pork), wild mushrooms, and a deep spice blend of cinnamon, saffron, and nutmeg. A quintessential winter comfort meal.
Round, savory pastry cups stuffed with seasoned lamb, pork lard, and sweet peas. Traditionally prepared during Easter, they are robust, highly portable snacks perfect for coastal hiking.

The yearly rhythm of Santanyí is punctuated by deep-rooted patron saint festivals, where Catholic traditions blend seamlessly with ancient pagan agricultural cycles. Participating in these celebrations is highly recommended:
